AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the work of structuring your content to be a direct answer to a question. The goal is for your brand to appear as a clear answer in featured answer boxes, the “People Also Ask” section, voice search and AI responses.

What does AEO target?

While classic SEO tries to get your page ranked, AEO tries to make your page the answer itself. This covers four surfaces:

  • Featured snippets: The definition, list or table box Google shows at the top of results.
  • People Also Ask: The expandable section answering follow-up questions.
  • Voice search: The short answer assistants read aloud.
  • AI answers: The definitions and steps embedded within the answer.

The difference between AEO and GEO

The two are related but not the same. AEO focuses on making content a direct answer; GEO targets your brand being mentioned in generative AI answers. A good AEO structure also feeds GEO. We covered all the differences in the GEO, AEO and SEO difference article.

The core building blocks of AEO

  1. Direct answer: Address the question clearly in the first 1–2 sentences.
  2. Definition blocks: Sections that explain “What is X?” concisely.
  3. Step-by-step processes: Numbered, scannable steps.
  4. Comparison tables: Tables comparing options by criteria, scrollable on mobile.
  5. Correct structured data: Schema consistent with information visible on the page only.

Does AEO just mean FAQs?

No. FAQs are a tool; AEO is about the whole page being answerable. Each section should be understandable on its own and anticipate the user’s follow-up questions.

Is there a guarantee?

No. Featured answers and voice results are chosen algorithmically; they can’t be guaranteed. What can be done is to bring content into the format most likely to be selected and to track the gains. This is how our AEO service works.

Summary

AEO is the discipline of making your content answer the right question in the right format. It’s not long text; it’s clear, structured, direct answers that win. To see opportunities in your industry’s most-asked questions, you can use the visibility analysis.
