GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting your brand mentioned accurately, positively and with citation in generative answers like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. In short: SEO gets you ranked, GEO gets you mentioned in AI answers.
Why did GEO emerge?
In classic search the system lists pages; the user chooses. In generative search, AI reads multiple sources, produces a single answer and names some brands in that answer. This new behavior created the difference between “being first in the ranking” and “being mentioned in the answer”. GEO targets the latter.
What does GEO rest on?
GEO isn’t a magic technique; it’s the combination of three levers:
- Content: Citation-worthy pages that answer questions directly and contain clear definitions and comparisons.
- Brand identity (entity): Consistent definition, on the site and outside it, of who your brand is and what topics it has authority on.
- Authority: Genuine brand mentions in independent, credible sources — not bought backlinks.
What GEO is NOT
- It’s not a secret markup or an “AI file”. Google states that no special file is needed to appear in AI features.
- It’s not leaking data to the model; that doesn’t work.
- It’s not a guarantee. No method can definitively promise a mention in an answer.
The difference isn’t in a secret technique; it’s in systematic execution and measurement.
The relation between GEO and SEO
GEO doesn’t replace SEO; it’s built on top of it. Technical SEO is essential for AI to find and read your site, and content quality for it to reach reliable content. So it’s healthiest to run GEO not alone but together with SEO and AEO. We covered the differences in detail in the GEO, AEO and SEO difference article.
How do you start?
GEO work starts with measurement: on which question, on which platform are you mentioned today? No target can be set without this picture. You can see your starting point with an industry-specific visibility analysis; then progress systematically with the GEO service.
Summary
GEO is the discipline of making your brand visible in AI answers. It works through the combination of content, brand identity and authority; it’s built on top of SEO and offers systematic probability-raising, not a guarantee.
